Calculate your class grade from assignments or find out what you need on the final exam. Supports weighted and unweighted grades with letter grade conversion.

How to Use Grade Calculator

  1. Select the mode: calculate current grade or find needed final exam score.
  2. For current grade, enter each assignment with score and total points.
  3. Enable weighted grades if your syllabus uses category weights.
  4. Add or remove assignments as needed.
  5. For final grade, enter current grade %, desired grade %, and final exam weight.
  6. View what-if scenarios showing your final grade for different exam scores.

How Grade Calculations Work

Grade calculators determine your overall performance by combining individual assignment scores into a single percentage and letter grade. In an unweighted (points-based) system, your grade is the total points earned divided by total possible points. For example, if you scored 85/100 on one assignment and 42/50 on another, your overall grade is (85+42)/(100+50) = 127/150 = 84.7%. This method treats every point equally regardless of the assignment type.

Weighted vs Unweighted Grading

Many courses use weighted grading, where different assignment categories carry different importance. Your grade is the weighted average: (category1% x weight1 + category2% x weight2 + ...) / (weight1 + weight2 + ...). For example, if Homework (weight 30%) averages 95% and Exams (weight 70%) average 82%, your overall grade is (95 x 30 + 82 x 70) / 100 = 86.1%. This means a 100% on homework counts less than a 100% on exams, reflecting the course's emphasis on exam performance. The Final Grade Calculator uses the formula: Needed Score = (Desired - Current x (1 - FinalWeight)) / FinalWeight, telling you exactly what you need on the final exam to reach your target grade.

Common Use Cases

  • Tracking your overall grade throughout a semester
  • Determining the minimum final exam score needed to pass a class
  • Comparing weighted vs unweighted grade scenarios
  • Planning study priorities based on remaining grade impact
  • Calculating the effect of extra credit on your overall grade
  • Running what-if scenarios for different final exam outcomes

Understanding the Letter Grade Scale

This calculator uses the standard US letter grade scale: A+ (97-100%), A (93-96.9%), A- (90-92.9%), B+ (87-89.9%), B (83-86.9%), B- (80-82.9%), C+ (77-79.9%), C (73-76.9%), C- (70-72.9%), D+ (67-69.9%), D (63-66.9%), D- (60-62.9%), and F (below 60%). Some institutions use slightly different scales, but this is the most common system in US colleges and universities. Letter grades convert to GPA points on a 4.0 scale, where A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. Plus and minus modifiers typically adjust the GPA by 0.3 points (A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, etc.).
