What Is a Tip?

A tip (also called a gratuity) is a voluntary payment made to service workers on top of the billed amount. In the United States, tipping is a deeply rooted cultural practice and a significant portion of income for servers, bartenders, delivery drivers, and other service professionals. Standard tip percentages typically range from 15% to 20% for restaurant dining, though the amount can vary based on service quality, the type of establishment, and regional customs. This calculator takes the guesswork out of tipping by instantly computing the tip amount, total bill, and per-person cost when splitting the check.

How Tip Amounts Are Calculated

The formula for calculating a tip is straightforward: Tip Amount = Bill Total x (Tip Percentage / 100). For example, an 18% tip on a $50 bill equals $50 x 0.18 = $9.00, making the total $59.00. When splitting between multiple people, both the tip and total are divided equally: Per Person = (Bill + Tip) / Number of People. So $59.00 split four ways would be $14.75 per person. Etiquette experts generally recommend calculating the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people tip on the post-tax total for simplicity.

Common Use Cases

  • Calculating the right tip at a restaurant, bar, or coffee shop
  • Splitting a group dinner bill evenly, including the tip
  • Determining delivery tip amounts for food, grocery, or package deliveries
  • Figuring tips for service providers like hairdressers, taxi drivers, or hotel staff
  • Comparing how different tip percentages affect the total cost

Tipping Guidelines by Service Type

Tipping customs vary by industry, and knowing the expected range can help you tip appropriately. For sit-down restaurant service, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard, with 20% or more reserved for excellent service. Buffet-style restaurants typically warrant a 10% tip since wait staff provide fewer services. For food delivery, 15% to 20% is customary, with a minimum of $3 to $5 for smaller orders. Bartenders usually receive $1 to $2 per drink or 15% to 20% of a running tab.

Outside of dining, many services also have tipping conventions. Hair stylists and barbers typically receive 15% to 20%. Taxi and rideshare drivers are commonly tipped 15% to 20% of the fare. Hotel housekeeping staff generally receive $2 to $5 per night, left daily rather than as a lump sum at checkout. Valet parking attendants customarily receive $2 to $5 when the car is returned. While tipping is not mandatory in most situations, it is considered an important part of how service workers earn their living, especially in the United States where base wages for tipped employees are often lower than the standard minimum wage.
