How to Use Unit Converter

  1. Select a conversion category: Length, Weight, Temperature, or Volume.
  2. Choose the unit you are converting from using the left dropdown.
  3. Choose the unit you are converting to using the right dropdown.
  4. Enter a value in either field and the other will update automatically.
  5. Use the swap button to quickly reverse the conversion direction.

What is Unit Conversion?

Unit conversion is the process of changing a measurement from one unit to another within the same measurement category. This is essential in science, engineering, cooking, travel, and everyday life. This tool supports four major categories: length (metric and imperial), weight (metric and imperial), temperature (Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin), and volume (metric, US customary, and UK imperial). All conversions are performed instantly in your browser with no data sent to any server.

Metric vs Imperial Systems

The metric system (SI) is based on powers of 10, making conversions between units straightforward. One kilometer is 1,000 meters, and one kilogram is 1,000 grams. The imperial system uses less uniform conversion factors: 1 mile equals 5,280 feet, and 1 pound equals 16 ounces. Most countries use the metric system exclusively, while the United States primarily uses the imperial system for everyday measurements. The UK uses a mix of both systems. Understanding both systems and being able to convert between them is increasingly important in our connected world.

Common Use Cases

  • Cooking with international recipes that use different measurement systems
  • Understanding foreign weather forecasts and temperature readings
  • Shopping for products with metric or imperial sizing
  • Converting measurements for construction and home improvement projects
  • Interpreting medical and scientific data across systems
  • Comparing fuel efficiency between L/100km and mpg

Temperature Conversion Notes

Temperature conversion is unique because it involves both scaling and offsetting, unlike length and weight conversions that only require multiplication. Celsius and Fahrenheit scales have different zero points and different degree sizes. Kelvin shares the same degree size as Celsius but starts at absolute zero (0 K = -273.15 C). This means you cannot simply multiply to convert temperatures. The formulas are: F = C * 9/5 + 32, C = (F - 32) * 5/9, and K = C + 273.15.
